The point here is as I believe in people going from one extreme to another. Intolerance left a mark in consciousness of every man. And as the word was used only in pejorative sense it has become a sort of a curse. Unnecessarily, but it has. It may show two things: One that the intolerance is not REALLY gone, or at least it's disappearing is not believed in, or two - that the people who said: "Tolerance from now on" realized that it cannot be just finished as if cut off as a knife, and now their descendants (as I believe that's another generation "marked" as 'tolerant') don't believe in tolerance of their people.

Why do I believe so? Well, I live in Poland. As it is Eastern Europe, there never were too many people with dark skin (I mean here not only the Afro- but also Latino- Asian and so on). They weren't here at the times of intolerance, so there was no one to intolerate. So if there are any Afro- coming to Poland, they are seen as well, anyone else, really. Color of the skin is something like color of the eyes really...

...unless we talk about 'skins' and 'dres' (subcultures who are most known for the violence, robberies and/or xenophobia)... But well, they can't be called intolerant either... they hate everybody equally... >.< :p

lets just say that some folks want to live in the past and others don't!
if pantie waist were not in the top branches of govt. then things might change! i reference this as a fact....
around here(where i live) the rebel flag has been banned from all schools! why i ask? because it references slavery! and our African neighbors think its racist....no its not its part of American history! nothing more and something that Africans should be proud of....it freed them!
but like you said ..do we ban everything from history that might be racist? if we do our history books will be very SHORT !!! yeah no more history classes to bore us to sleep ! not gonna happen!
i personally am so tired of this race thing ...beating every one down at every turn!!
cant say the "N" word cause it is raciest ....is it ? i hear it all the time coming from the browns everyday! and everywhere!
also note: there is no such thing as African Americans!
we are all Americans!
if you cant live with that GO HOME ! !

And just how are you communicating all this information to everyone...? Through WORDS. Words DO have power, ESPECIALLY in literature, which is something you're referencing, might I add. That stupid saying is BS. People take stuff to heart, and that's the truth. Now, the degree/severity of it varies... so people will obviously be riled up if someone says something racist in total ignorance.
