A lot of French women buy a few basic, expensive pieces that are timeless, not trendy. If you want to look stereotypically French (to an American), I suppose all you'd have to do is wear a black-and-white striped, long sleeved shirt with a boatneck and don a black beret. But if you want to dress like the true French:
Basic, timeless, tailored pieces that you can wear for the rest of your life! French women tend to find their own look and stick to it. Think a tan, fitted coat. A pencil skirt in a neutral color, or a little black dress with a nipped-in waist. A good pair of pumps. Luxurious lipstick in the perfect color red. A classic chignon hairstyle. I would also say that the wardrobe should be built around black, white, beige/tan, and red, with accents in colors flattering to the skin tone.
I also read in Allure magazine that French women don't usually dye their hair like most American women do. They think it's more beautiful to show off your natural color. I think that they also tend to wear less eye makeup and thick foundation than Americans.
