The Simpsons is set in a fictional American city of Springfield. The state in which it is located has never been made clear, and it is not actually intended to exist in any specific state. Nevertheless, throughout the show's history, fans have tried to determine where Springfield is by taking the town's characteristics, surrounding geography and nearby landmarks as clues. As a response, in more recent episodes, the show has been intentionally deceptive about the state, and nearly every state and region in the U.S. has been both suggested and ruled out by conflicting "evidence". Groening has stated that Springfield has much in common with Portland, Oregon, the city he grew up in,[22] and the name "Springfield" was chosen because it is a common city name, appearing in more than thirty states. The geography of Springfield and its surrounding areas are seen to be "flexible" and have been shown to contain coastlines, deserts, vast farmland, and tall mountains, or whatever a story or joke requires.

In one episode of the simpsons the state springfield was in was revealed. It was on an envelope. The state, however, was not one of the 50 US states. It was Springfield, TA.

They have done a lot to point out how they avoid telling us. In one episode, Lisa is pointing to a map of the US to show where their city is but Homer's head blocks the map so we can't see. And once Marge was talking about Springfield and it seems like she's going to say Springfield, Ohio, but she sees Maude Flanders and says "Springfield, Oh hi, Maude!"

They never actually tell the state. Many beleive it to be Oregon since the creator, Matt Groening is from Eugene, OR (which is right next to Springfield, OR) but there have also been indications that it has been elsewhere.

It's one of the long running jokes of the show, that they don't ever tell you what state. Springfield is one of the most used town names; many states have one.

Actually, the state is never identified in the show. It's supposed to be generic.
