I'm white, and i've done all those things you've listed. Plus more. I have black friends who have done the same. I have black friends who have not. Why don't you try not thinking in such an "us and them" format, and realize that we are all the same, and yet different, at the same time. Let a person be whoever they choose to be.

I would challenge you to look at American culture in everything from music to language to dress and you would be surprised to see how much of our culture started in the black community. When you say we can't dress and "act" like them I believe you are not being honest. How do you explain the success of people like Eminem and Kid Rock? More than 50% off the buyers of rap and hip hop are white. Today it's interesting to see how young white kids are picking up on many of the trends started in the black community. As for the hair example you state, there are relatively few natural blondes in the white community as well. As for the "hair straightening" if you are old enough to remember a movie with Bo Derek call "10", she wore her hair in corn rows. She started an interesting trend where long haired white women were getting corn rows. As for the colored contacts. the vast majority of people using colored contact lenses are white.
There is no double standard as all groups in our country have been adding to (and borrowing from) the rich culture that is uniquely American.

first of all whens the last time YOU tried to comb an afro? most of the time its not about trying to be white, its just a little easier to not have nappy hair in the morning. second, no black person i know wears blue contacts, i dont know what hooker corner youre going to but im sure those are the only black people wearing those anymore. thirdly, why do white people dye their hair then? and why do white people get butt implants? are they not proud of their race either? dont be so quick to judge things you dont know about. im black and im proud and i dye my hair and straighten it. and just one more thing... what exactly do black people "act" like? cuz last time i checked, personalities were formed by a persons enviornment, so if they grew up in an educated enviornment are they less black than those who didnt?

Even if you are proud of your RACE, you might not be proud of the attributes that come along with it if they are not thought of as attractive...
For example, if you had frizzy, kinky hair your whole life, but you always see female celebrities with straight, blond hair (even African-American women like Beyonce) and it's thought of as attractive and desirable...you might get extensions in your hair when you have the opportunity.
I'd also like to add that there are many WHITE women, as well of women of other races, that dye their hair and put colored contacts in their eyes. They also TAN their skin, because pasty white glow-in-the-dark skin is not the current fashion! Paris Hilton was brown-eyed, with mousy dark brown hair until she got bright blue contacts, bleached out her short hair and put in long blonde extensions.
I would say that overall, it has to do with what is thought of as attractive at the moment. The current Hollywood standard of beauty is lightened hair, tan skin, light-colored eyes, and a very tall, thin body with fake boobs.
I'd also like to add that Beyonce bleaches her skin to look more white, just as white people fake tan their skin dark. White women also get boob implants, butt implants, and lip injections--though these are all traits that black/ethnic women have! So in a way, white women do try to look more black...

you cannot cram the entire black race into that commment, and i my opinion it is because they have to they are taught to believe that what they were born with isn't pretty, i am mixed and sometimes i would give any thing to be a full blooded african american women, it is not a double standard, society has molded a race of women who all want to be pretty and to some women having straight hair and blue eyes is pretty that doesnt mean that they aren't proud of their race, it means that they want to be accepted by society. black women are proud of their race, like your saying, that's just like white girls going to get a tan or breast implants, because that's what society has taught them is pretty.

that is not right!!
white people like to dye their hair black
or curl it
or have a tan so their skin is darker
they like a change from the way they look!
also black people like a change
it's all in the name of fashion
we are all people & no one is better than the other.
as long as people are nice thats all that counts

i think of you're proud to be linked with black people who have performed achievement and greatness yet i think of it fairly is the place your satisfaction ends. with the aid of your movements and alternatives you elect to no longer honor the legacy and traditions of the people you're linked with. for this reason you're a individual. Your movements are that of your individual and don't mirror the traditions, customs and lifestyle of your people. you're properly interior of your rights as a unfastened individual to do as you elect. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that persons are no longer obligated to settle for or help your movements and alternatives. for this reason in that considering you're on your individual.

like "them" wow. i'm not even wasting time capsing right now b/c all i have to say is look at what white women do to look more like "them". we are all equal in God's eyes so it shouldn't matter if we choose to look equal as well. it's also a matter of fashion and convenience, don't be too quick to judge buddy!

Why don't you talk about asians and hispanics? Don't they covet light skin and straight hair too? But, aren't they proud too?
