non-thinking piece of slimey sludge that eventually evolved into something that walked out of the water, then eventually evolved into a monkey, then eventually became human?

No, evolution is NOT a fact. It's a theory. If you choose to believe in it, that is called "faith." Ha ha! Welcome to the club.

I think this is an intriguing and wonderful question because it enables us to experience first hand the blind ignorance and the factless faith of many respondents. What I like most are the mindless parrots - on both sides of the issue - squawking and repeating the ideas that they personally embrace.

The very nature of your question sets up this entertaining conflict. Humankind was not even around a million generations ago (presume 1 generation equals 18 years). Remember, the blind see what they choose to see; the deaf hear what they want to hear. That is not an article of "faith", it is a fact.

If you want to talk facts, then this question qualifies for the history category. If you wish to talk beliefs, philosophy, and opinions then the question belongs over in the spiritual & religion section.

The facts are:
+ Evolution is a proven fact. The process of evolution is, like any appropriate scientific and objective process, observable and measurable.
+ The first prime evidence of evolution involves natural selection wherein ONLY the strongest and fittest species are able to propogate and survive. Science can prove that YOU actually are related to your mother and great-grandmother genetically and not just because of rumor or family oral tradition. This underscores the validity and value of DNA testing.

+ The second prime evidence is that of adaptability of species. Adaptability enables species to slowly over time develop traits that enhance their ability to basically survive. One perfect example of this trait involves analyzing how improved nutrition, improved health and sanitation conditions, and better training techniques enables the human body to run faster, longer, and jump higher. People are taller and physically more rigorous. Study your biology to learn how the body's immuno defense system from the time you are conceived EVOLVES and strengthens itself.

It's really funny to read about those parrots churping "missing link! missing link! Where's the missing link!" Clear and distinct and traceable evolutionary fossil records give unassailable evidence of the evolution process and origins of species. When was the last time you personally found an intact complete skeleton of a bird or a mouse or a cat? Never...should you conclude then that none of those creatures ever existed because you found no complete fossil record?

You could have had more fun with this question if you had posed the question, "Why do religious bible thumping zealots use different different standards of proof for evolution theorists than they use for their own beliefs?" Or "How do you explain the extraordinary similarities in human fetal development and those of other mammals as photographed using modern science?"

The best question I have heard on the question is this, "If God is all powerful, why couldn't he have used evolution for his miraculous creation of humankind?" Evolution is the means and way by which God sustains his Creation. Creation didn't end on the 6th day, it is going on every minute.

Why not, sounds as credible as being blinked into existence. I think before people continue to complain about evolution being so unbelievable, they should maybe look at the fact that there beliefs make just as little sense to those who either don't believe in a supreme being, or who believe god works within the bounds of physics.

well evolution is a fact so I guess I would have to say it happened that way unless proven wrong.

Sorry, it's a fact AND a theory. I've taken a class on it before - it really does happen.

Ever hear of Darwin's finches? on a secluded island, it has been scientifically documented that the bird population adapts via evolution when dry seasons produce unusually small seeds that these birds feed on. Sorry to disappoint you.

A million generations ago would be about 300,000-400,000 years ago. By that time humanity's ancestors had already evolved considerably - were already tool-users, for example. I'd suggest you check out what a million generations actually means.
The difference between the two positions is that on the one side there is evidence, on the other there is no evidence.

Why bother to ask this question? The people who believe in creation will continue to do so, and the people whp believe in evolution will continue to do so. No one here has said anything thought provoking enough to change someone else's beliefs.

um, excuse me... but apparently the first poster knows very little about evolution... nothing about evolution has been proved to be a fact, or else you could explain all the missing links and gaps. Show me proof of evolution, and I'll show you slugs climbing up my family tree.

What does belief have to do with it, it does make more sense than believing in the supernatural explanation, now that's far fetched.
