Nothing. As soon as you cover one hole, they dig another. They are avid tunnellers. Some people have tried the following. Baiting large rat traps with peanut butter ...yes, you will have to kill the squirrel, or put mothballs into the openings. Some people actually flood the tunnels with water from a garden hose and that seems to be pretty effective.

Short of putting a metal mesh on the lawn, there really isn't a permanent solution.
Some people trap the squirrels. The humane traps capture them live, which means you have to find a place to set the little bugger free. The other types of traps leave you with the awful mess of disposal. Neither one is very pleasant and there are usually quite a few squirrels in a particular area, meaning this will have to be done more than once.
Devices such as high frequency sound emitters and animal scents may be effective for a short period of time. Once the squirrel gets use to them, and they will, they become ineffective, and you're out a lot of money.
The use of "Squirrel Away" or "Hot Pepper Spray" are also ineffective as deterrents. They can actually do harm to both squirrels, and other animals, especially when these products get into their eyes. Then how do you deal with a blind squirrel?
The use of "moth balls" as a deterrent does work. But again, only temporarily. A determined squirrel will get used to the smell, or simply push the "smelly stuff" out of its way. So if you do try this method, wrap them in a piece of metal screening to form a bag. Then tie the bag to a solid object, make it as difficult as possible for the squirrel to move. You will have to replace the contents every few days for it to be truly effective.

Squirrels are digging holes in your yard and storing nuts for the winter. They may look cute, but they’re really just rodents with a bushy tail! And those big teeth and digging claws can do a lot of damage, including destroying lawns, and gardens. They are a real nuisance for homeowners.
Trapping squirrels can be expensive and dangerous (they can be fierce when cornered!). Poisoning them is illegal in many states, and puts pets and people at risk. There is an effective, safe squirrel repellent that really works. Shake-Away is an easy-to-use and scientifically-proven remedy.
Shake-Away the Strongest Squirrel Repellent in Nature
What are Shake-Away squirrel control? It is a powerful granular repellent that takes advantage of the strongest deterrent in the animal kingdom… your small critters, inborn, instinctive FEAR. Shake-Away Small Critter Powder contains the scent of the squirrels worst enemy, the Fox.
Hope this helps some.

One thing that helps is reducing the infiltration in your yard by making your trees inhospitable to the squirrels. You do this by wraping a 1 foot band of metal around your trees no less than six feet from the ground. The squirrels will not be able to climb your trees and will not venture as often into your yard because they won't have the ability to run up a tree if they feel threatened. You can paint the metal a color that closely matches the color of your trees so it's less noticeable.
This will cause the squirrels to nest in other neighborhood trees and find food that is more conveinent.

We had that same problem ( in our back yard) but what made it worse was that our dogs chase the squirrels and try and dig them out of their burrows and that made the holes even bigger. One of my sons tried traps, didn't work and because of the dogs we couldn't use poison. So one day he just sat out there and waited for the dogs to point out the squirrels and then he shot the squirrels with a pellet gun. It also worked with the skunks...no more varmints. ...crude but effective and safe for the dogs.

I have yet to try any products, chipmunks are more of a problem for me. I have seen fox urine powder and other products in Home Depo...

But professional pest removal companies say the only way to get rid of them is to trap them.
