For most offices, there is a time period between when an election is held and the office changes hands.

So, for example, if a new president is elected in November, he doesn't move into the White House on the next day. The old president is still the president until his term runs out at the end of the year.

The person who was elected but who hasn't yet taken his office is the 'whatever'-elect. In our example, he'd be the president-elect. See?

The term holds for other things too. There are senators-elect, mayors-elect, and probably even employees-of-the-month-elect, if your office is that organized, that is!

The president elect is a candidate who has won the election in November but hasn't been sworn into office yet. The presidents term doesn't begin until January 20th.

President elect is someone elected to the office of President but the time has not arrived for him to actually take the office/control. Our elections' results come in a couple of months before the winner takes the office and actually begins to run the country.

Not sure, but I think that president elect refers to a president who was elected by the people through voting. A president (not elect) may be the vice president who took office of the president because the president was assinated, or possibly died of other causes.

A President-elect is a person who has been elected President, but is waiting to take office at a future set date. It doesn't happen instantaneously. The President is the one currently in office. Hope this helps.

I'm thinking president is who is currently in office, and president elect is the newly elected president who hasn't yet made it into office.
