Your question has three answers depending on what you mean when you ask ,"What is the highest mountain in the United States of America?"

1. If you mean, "What is the highest mountain in the continental United States (CONUS)?": the correct answer is Mount Rainier, in the state of Washington at 14,411 feet above sea level.

(Correction: Rather than "continental" United States, I should have written "contiguous" United States.)

2. If you mean, "What is the highest mountain ABOVE SEA LEVEL in ALL of the United States of America?": the correct answer is Mount McKinley in the state of Alaska at 20,320 feet above sea level.

3. If you mean, "What is the highest mountain FROM BASE TO PEAK in ALL of the United States of America?": the correct answer is Mauna Kea in the state of Hawaii which has a total height measured from base to peak of 33,474 feet. [This mountain is actually the TALLEST MOUNTAIN IN THE WORLD--measuring 19,678 feet from its base under the ocean to the ocean surface, and 13,796 feet from the ocean surface to its peak which is known as Pu'u Wekiu (i.e., Mauna Kea has an elevation of 13,796 above sea level).]
