Out of the two names, I say 100% Melrose.
River.....gives a little too much lead way of being made fun of. As a substitute and pre school teacher, I get a lot of kids who have names such as November, Autume and names from days of the week, have higher bully rates sadly.
Now, your child and can name her what you would like; however, keep in mind on how the child will feel too.

Of the two, I would say Melrose. Depending on the personality of the child, she might be 'Rosie' when she is little -- growing into "Rose". Or she might be a bit of a tomboy and go by 'Mel'. Make sure she has an excellent middle name, so that if further down the road, for whatever reason, she may decided to go by her first initial and middle name. M. _________

Melrose is my maiden name. It's English. Are you considering these names to be different or because they really define something important for you. Pick a name that has meaning for you and one that will also give the child a sense of pride. If the name brings negative attention, the child will be uphappy. You need a name that gives the child confidence and a feeling of acceptance.

I would say Melrose over River, kids can be cruel when it comes to teasing about one anothers names and River would be easy to pick on.

Both names make me want to trade in my gas guzzling SUV for a bicycle and pack granola where it burns, which is not a good thing. However, it's your offspring, not mine. So, to err on the side of logic and not taste, I will suggest, River, because Melrose is too wordy. River just flows better, no pun intended.

I like River. If you name her Melrose, she is going to end up being called Mel or Melly.

SORRY BUT NO TO BOTH. i'm a nice person but hate to see your child end up with a name like that however if your set on it i sure hope you & your man are pretty people because she is gonna have to be hot to pull-off a name like that good luck but i think you should go through the name book again.
back to your question the best of the worst is River.
