I recently helped my in laws asseble a new computer. They don't know what to do with the old one. It is a tower from like 1998 or so, a CRT monitor, a printer, keyboard, mouse, speakers

you should keep the things like the ram, harddrive, and cd drive

Having worked with many non-profit organizations like the SPCA, etc. donated computers can be a huge asset. If you can, try and find a new home for the computer, and if not, then I would ensure it gets recycled...not simply trashed. Our landfills are full enough.

Improperly trashing it is poor for the environment. I would either recycle it (many larger retailers have programs), try to sell it, or I would post it on freecycle or a similar site in order to donate it/give it away.

Many computer stores take in old computers and recycle them! This I would do! Use less, Recycle, Reuse! My motto.

The goodwill has a good regeneration program for computers.
