What kind of car? Could be the fuel pump. Could be the battery is drained to the point where it can no longer crank the car. Tell him to turn on the headlights and try to start it. If the headlights cut off when he tries than you know its the battery.

Sounds like the fuel pump gave out. That's why the car stopped. As for how to fix it that depends on the car. Most late model cars have the pump in the tank and your better off going to a shop to get it done. It also could be a fuse or a relay again have a shop look at it.

Two possible causes.
1) The battery connection are loose or corroded.
2) The wire from the battery to the starter may be disconnected or the in line fuse may be blown, that is if everything electrical is working but not turning the engine over to start. Also be sure there is gas in the tank and the throttle cable. Good Luck and GOD Bless.

a quick easy check for the fuel pump. when you turn the key to the on position, have him put his head near the gas tank. You should hear a whirring noise. If not, the fuel pump has gone out.
