Hi there, first let me start by saying that many countries have traditions for new years day for example, Brazil they wear white on new years eve to represent good luck in the upcoming year.

That being said, I asked my great grandfather if he knew anything about people wearing yellow on new years day. His answer was that it was an old tradition started back many many years ago that has mostly died down today. But the reason for the tradition that Yellow is the color of the Sun and the Sun represents life, fertility and as well as gold "rays of sunshine" which represents wealth. So in short the reason is to welcome good luck, life, wealth and fertility for land and life.

I hope that helps

Mandee

This would depend on which country's tradition you are following. Apparently, in Brazil, yellow represents prosperity. In America, it was reported (by Voices of America in 2001) that wearing yellow on New Year's Day is said to attractive love. Both concepts purport that wearing a certain color (yellow) increases one's luck—for yellow, in either love or prosperity. Luck is a ubiquitous theme in Eastern culture.

We don't have to be superstitious, but many people are. I was always told to never cook poultry on New Year's Day, 'or you'll scratch for a living the whole year.' Hence, we have pork on New Years Day out of a traditition that stems from my mother's superstition. I'm not superstitious, but, over the years it has become a tradition.

I did not know that we had to. This is the first time I have ever heard of wearing yellow on New Year's Day. If I spill some of my collard greens or black eyed peas on my yellow shirt, it will stain it forever and everyone will be able to see. No yellow for me!!

For American New Years? I have never heard that but for Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year), we wear gold and red because those colors represent happiness, luck, prosperity, etc.

If you were celebrating the Chinese New Year you would be able to wear red.

Never heard of it. Perhaps some organization is promoting it to remember our troops deployed away from home.

You don't have to, but the tradition is that it brings good luck. I have no idea where or why that started.
