Does anyone know what a good independant study durring a pig dissection is? Our teacher suggested measuring all the organ, doing a eye dissection and further exploring the brain however she prefered if we didn't do one of the above mentioned things. If you have any it would be much appreciated.

Fetal pig lungs are cool, because if you make a small slit in the esophagus and put a straw in, you can blow into it and the lungs will actually inflate. I'm not sure how extensive your independent study is supposed to be, but it's a cool trick. As soon as you blow in, though, take your mouth off of the straw. Sometimes some fluid spits back up at you when the pig "exhales."

You could also do a comparative study of pig intestines. I don't remember how long a human's intestines are (half a mile? Something ridiculous like that) but you could stretch out your pig's intestines and compare that length to a human's. Are they proportional? A fetal pig is about one sixth (?) the size of a human. Are their intestines one sixth the length of a human's?

The eye dissection was the most fun of all. That is if it is a cows eye. I loved doing all the pig dissections for A&P, at first I was a little wierd but after a couple and getting used to just ripping the thing open (not being so gentle) it was a great learning experience. Again I thought the eye was most interesting of all. That and the organs might be best.
