Similar ideas on what marriage means, whether or not you will have children and how you will raise them. A compatible sense of humor is a must. Similar interests are very helpful. Respect for each other is another must. Don't go into it thinking you'll change the other one after you're married. What you see is what you get. And never take the other one for granted. My husband and I still say please and thank you to each other. He opens doors for me and I always thank him.

Willingness to compromise and grow together in the relationship. However, it is almost impossible to compromise on certain major life goals like having children. If one person really wants them and the other does not, that would be a major problem. I really like the work of researcher John Gottman on marriage. His books are in all the major bookstores if you want to browse. I wish you all the best.

You must be equally yolked...ie similar family backgrounds, educational levels, belief systems, morals, socioeconomic status and values. These all play a huge part in the marriage and how communication is handled! Communication and compromise are major players as well both parties must be equally giving!

Their level of maturity, being respectful of each other and having the ability to compromise. Love of course is a given, but without the other stuff, even love can fade.

You should both be interested in what the other wants in your relationship. Be sensitive to their emotions. Don't put them down or embarrass them in public.
It helps to have a healthy sex life, but if you don't, you can work that out if you truly love each other.
