I don't think it can be taught, it must be realized. It is wisdom, not knowledge. You only see the greatness of life when all that you know is taken away. But if you have to try, I agree with the previous answers, avoid materialism and show true suffering and sorrow.

Only, coming close enough to death, to shake hands and then being allowed to return can teach the appreciation of life!

You cannot know the beauty of love until you have lost it!

Even as you cannot play music unless you have been in love, every thing before that is just correct notes and technique.

There is one way, go to war, be shot at, see many around you die, and you come back alive!

If you think I am too extreme, look at how so many are willing to commit others to death because they say America will be embarrassed if we leave Iraq now! Over 2500 dead, for no reason, and the masses call for more! So long as they are not going! Did you question the appreciation of life?

I remember trying to compete in track and field because my big sister did. It just wasn't my thing. It didn't come easy to me so I just gave up on it. I would run the 800 and come in second to last every time. The girl who came in last had down's syndrome. Then I realized that I was really the one who came in last, because here was this girl with a severe disadvantage in life, yet she tried harder and was involved in more activities than most people who were healthy, intelligent and even priviliged. I realized that I was wasting my life by not trying, not participating, by not doing my best. People who whine and complain and who are lazy yet have nothing wrong with them are the saddest creatures on earth. I think of that girl, how she perservered in everything that she tried to do. And I think of myself sometimes as such a waste. But it grants a perspective of appreciation that some people never realize.

By having them teach another person something that makes a difference to them.

Honestly, when I see people who are down on their luck or are overwhelmed with sadness, it is the reminders that they do and can make a difference in this world, that everyone has something to offer, by showing them the power in themselves to help anothers life be more hopeful, they could appreciate the life they were given, as well as the lives that surround them.

what makes you so sure that they dont? none of us like everything about our lives, but if even 1 less weight is laid on someone, could make the difference of wanting to end it all or to live. what im saying is instead of trying to teach someone how to appreciate life, spend time with them and accept them without being judgemental, and problem solved? when a million people ask you what is wrong with you, would you keep saying nothing? what if they kept saying you didnt appreciate life? would you start thinking on it? im a hermit by circumstance, not choice. i have no life, and i still love it, its better than not being.
if your worrying about how someone else spends their priceless time and existence, then i guess your also squandering yours as well?
gossip sucks. it passes the time, but it can ruin someone's chances of jumping on the merry-go-round.

One has to experience some type of loss to really appreciate not only life but what life has to offer. Everyone will experience some type of loss during their life and hopefully the loss will make the person a better person, not a bitter person. I know about losses and it does make one stronger and a bit wiser.

Philosopher Samuel Johnson said, that nothing makes a man focus on the importance of life, more than the realization that he only has a fortnight to live." Bring someone to the edge of certain death, and they will get the message. I paraphrase, but accurately.

you can't. They have to learn on their own. You can't change another person's attitudes, only your own. As long as you appreciate life and are living your life the best you can, you can lead by example. But the other person has to want to change their attitude.
