From a strictly practical stand point, I would say to marry someone in a completely unrelated field. Usually different sectors are affected differently in a down turn in the economy. What are the odds of both of you being out of work. Imagine that you both work in construction, odds are good that you both get laid off

I would pick someone who didn't share my intended line of work (advertising). Then my competitive self would come out to play. On the other hand, it's easier to just forget about being with someone at all and focus on work.

I'd prefer to marry someone who share everything but work interest. Why? Because I'd prefer to marry to someone who will introduce me to the world beyond my reach. I believe that it will make home a getaway place.

It depends, exclusively, on the people involved. If you're both in the same field, it might get boring talking about the same things. If you are in different fields, you might enjoy sharing different experiences. My wife and I are in total opposites - I find discussing her world, a welcome break from mine and vice versa.

I don't think a couple's respective occupations are relevant to their compatibility. There are many other factors that are much more important than occupation.
