CNET.com Review:

"While you could live with the Core System's lack of a wireless controller and headset, its missing hard drive is the deal breaker. Without a hard drive, you can't use Xbox Live, save your games, or play original Xbox titles. You'd be "saving" $100, only to have to go out and buy the stand-alone hard drive accessory for that same price. Likewise, all the other missing peripherals are available à la carte for the Core System, but they'll run you at least $110, not including the $100 hard drive. In other words, the $399 bundle gives you at least $210 worth of extra accessories for only $100 more.
If you have any interest in getting the Xbox 360, do not buy the Core System. Save, scrape, or splurge, but get the full Xbox 360 bundle. You'll be saving yourself money and aggravation in the long run."

If you buy the core system, you can purchase a memory card to save your games. They run around $35. If you decide to "save, scrape, or splurge", look for special bundles for no extra cost. I work at Wal-Mart and for Thanksgiving week sales, we had a special bundle pack that included one of two games. When we ran out unexpectedly, Microsoft issued a $50 gift card with Premium 360 purchase for the remainder of the sale. This could happen again for Christmas!
Hope that helps. Good luck and happy gaming.

well you will be left with the bare bones, it wont include anything for you to save games on, so you would have to go buy a memory card or a hardrive for it. And if you buy the core you cant play original Xbox games, and you cant play all the Xbox 360 games without the harddrive cause they use the harddrive's cache abilities to load enviroments and what not ex. Elder Scrolls Oblivion.

Of course it will. The core system can save games. It HAS a hard drive, thats what saves the games. The hard drive you are thinking of is like an extension, it let's you hold more ( a lot more)
