I am having problems coming up with an idea for a science project for my sixth grader. Does anyone have any ideas that are creative but inexpensive?

Since it's winter, try this project making a snowflake with borax and water. Here's the link:

Or, there are other projects listed on the same site you may find interesting.

My sister did a project about cavities. She brought in candy and had people eat the candy and then use a pH strip to test the acidity levels in their mouth - higher acidity = higher incidence of cavities. My sister was artistic and made a model of the mouth - teeth and all (with cheap clay) - it can also be drawn or copied from various sources.

Another project would be cave formation - you can show the formation of stalactites and stalagmites (top and bottom of caves) by making rock candy. Hot water + lots of sugar. Allow to cool - use thread or string hanging from a pencil in a glass.

Just 2 suggections - very inexpensive.

I am a biology and chemistry teacher at a high school - I have tons of ideas but I am not sure how much money you want to spend or how much work / research is expected. Contact me for more info if you would like it.

When I was younger I did a project about the seals, ducks n other animals effected by human polution. Like the six pack cans plastic piece that can get stuck around an animals throat n kill them. Sounds lame but it didnt take long and I recieved 2nd place out of the whole school.

Well, when I was in gradeschool (actually I was in highschool), I did a science project on burping, the effects on burping, what causes the burping, and so on. Well, I did a pretty good job. I did receive a B+ on it. You can go to your library near you and get some books on that topic.
