Being Prepared, Good listener, Asking pertinent questions, Excellent Appearance, Honesty in answering questions, Knowing facts about the company-doing research prior to your interview, having a concise 1 page resume, and interviewing the interviewer.
Do not use the words like"like", can't, don't, sometimes, didn't, use I can, I do, I will.
It would help if you had certificates of acccomplishment/merit, excellent attendance and associations that you belong to.

Hi Ultra,

I have been a hiring manager for close to 40 years so I guess that I may be qualified to answer. I have also NEVER used HR and they KNOW it! I make a hire and they are MY responsibilty to sink, EXCEL or sink.

The KEY is HOMEWORK to COMPLETLY know what the company wants from a new hire. After the HOMEWORK decide if YOU can do what they want; if you are uncomfortable with it then PASS because it will save EVERYONE a bunch of time and false expectations.

If it is a CASUAL company do NOT show up in an Ann Taylor suit with 6" heels; dress accordingly.

ASK QUESTIONS that apply DIRECTLY to the position that you are applying for and have obtuse SOLUTIONS.

DO NOT be "NEEDY" or bring up personal issues; they just don't care about childcare and the like.

See yourself as a SOLUTION to a problem that they are attempting to solve and ROCK ON.

It is REAL SIMPLE! Most companies today are simply looking for someone to add something to the BOTTOM LINE and if you can convey that you are a SLAM DUNK!

Best of Luck,
Jacques

Potential...not having been hired yet...

Hmmm....I think of these...

A good resume, excellent references...a stable work history with few or no latenesses...a great interview. An extensive recommendation from a previous supervisor is essential too.
