When you hook up the iPod, the iPod manager should show up on your iTunes. When it starts to update, the songs being either imported or updated should show up in the bar where the song that's currently playing displays. Also, you can check your iPod for the songs when it has finished updating.

Wait until your ipod/itunes says "Ok to disconnect". Then disconnect the iPod from its USB, turn it on, and check "Music" + "Songs" to see if your songs uploaded. Good luck!

What until it says "Your upload is complete. You may disconnect." Or something like that.
