What exactly is faith? How can anyone surely know that their faith is true?

I do not follow any religious beliefs, I do find it very interesting that so many others do. Religion, not for me. Spirituality, yes,I believe in something greater than myself(there goes scientology) not a "GOD", but an equal.

Faith in faith? That's bootstrapping.
"I believe that if I really believe that I really believe..."

In faith on it's own? Very little. It can lead to disaster if it is placed in the wrong object, irrespective of the conviction, the utter certainty, of the faith/belief.
"I didn't think it was loaded" might be the simplest illustration of faith gone badly awry and refuted by the external world.

But without faith, which I take in the sense of committment, trust, almost total paralysis sets in. Some faith is required for life to preceed, even if it is partial or provisional. "Probably true", "I'm working on the assumption that...."

And some decisions are binary, with no real room for compromise.positions. There, it's a matter of gathering the best evidence available, and committing. Now we're touching the realm of religious faith. Starting from what counts as evidence. Subjective experience? Authoratitive texts? The opinion of the majority? (in a given locale?) Immediately the grounds for division become apparent. And we've already seen where sheer personal conviction can go wrong...

You just have to have faith that what you put your faith in is true! If you have religious faith, it helps to base it on something like the teachings of the religion. In Christianity, one's faith comes from one's belief in the Word of God in the Bible. You probably can't know for sure if your faith is true, that's why it is called faith. If you have faith in something, you believe it. Faith can be felt though, somewhat like instinct or intuition. You just have a feeling that it's true. Faith is very important to me. Without it, life would seem hopeless. Good question. Really makes a person think.

Jesus said that we have to believe by faith and not by sight. So it takes a lot of faith to believe in God and Jesus. I look at it this way. If I don't believe by faith, what good is my religion? It wouldn't mean anything if I couldn't go out everyday and be an example of my faith.
Faith to me is trusting that something is true. I am positive that God and Jesus exist because I believe like some philosophers that all people have an innate, (born with), a desire to fill that empty void which is known as God.

I agree with Link

I believe in my faith 100% most of the time. At other times when bad things happen, I tend to question my faith. These periods of doubt don't last very long as there are many reminders (at least to me) of the miracles present in our everyday lives that scientist cannot explain.

I have a good friend going through a divorce and he questions parts of his faith everyday. However, he still believes in the big picture. So, with him, it seems to be a 80% all the time faith believer.

That was fun, I like writing drivel and getting a lot of stuff out of my head.

Are you talking about Belief? That what sustaining Beliefs is a tiny Faith....We put our Faith in our belief and belief become a strong factor, which people confused with Faith. How our beliefs works in reality we are all know. All beliefs is a mind made faculties which is not necessarily to be true. Faith is a Divine force which make anything possible...It make possible so far existence of all kind of beliefs . Beliefs is a source of a War...All Wars is a clashes of beliefs....for we invested our Faith in.

from websters dictionary:
faith (noun)
# Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.
# Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.
# Loyalty to a person or thing; allegiance: keeping faith with one's supporters.
# often Faith Christianity The theological virtue defined as secure belief in God and a trusting acceptance of God's will.
# The body of dogma of a religion: the Muslim faith.
# A set of principles or beliefs.

you've gotten a lot of answers that don't really answer your question....heres mine...I have little faith in faith, if you are asking about the "faith" associated with Christianity. If you are asking about any other definition of faith, it varies......I'm not easy to convince about anything, so for me to have faith in someone or something takes quite a bit of knowledge.

Faith is when you believe in something you cannot prove. It's measured in a variety of ways, but I think what you're looking for is that subtle change in behavior that results when your faith tells you to do something that reason says is a bad choice. Most people think that faith is uncertain until it is tested.

If you believe something strongly, chances are it will lead you down a path that may make you feel uncertain.

I would reccomend you study Vedanta philosophy. as for "faith" the bible gives a very clear statement of its source, Romans 1-19/20 All things created of God, have been shown from creation, all there is to know of God,even unto the eternal power and Godhead. The spirit of God is within you, all this is within your heart. Ask God questions within your own heart,he will give you the answers. It is good to study scripture but listen to & follow your heart. Faith is ones belief in something beyond oneself. ALL faiths are "true" if you really believe in them. It really doesn't matter WHAT you believe- as long as you believe in something. Because ultimately- God is behind it all...
