Sorry if this seems like a silly question, but I just read someone's post who lets their baby play for a bit without a diaper on. My son LOVES it when I take his pampers off, but it's never off more than a minute b/c I don't want him to pee everywhere (he's 6 mo old). But I wonder if it wouldn't be good to it air it out a bit down there!

I like to let them air out for at least an hour a day depending on the season. In the winter they are more likely to wear the diaper 24 hours a day. In the summer sometimes I let them go for 2 or 3 hours naked, playing outside in the sprinkler or whatever. It is a bit easier to potty train them that way, but not if you have to clean carpets. It does help with diaper rash to let them air out. Unfortunately if there's no diaper most kids will start exploring this "new territory", or mine did anyway. Usually by six months you have some sort of schedule going, so you should be able to predict that he won't be peeing for 20 minutes at this time or 30 minutes at that time. Sometimes I even left it off for an hour while they napped, especially if it was warm to help with heat rash. Watch out for when he learns to take his own clothes off, then you won't have a choice about letting him run around naked lol At least you'll get a few laughs. Good Luck.

No!! I let my daughter be without a diaper almost every time that I change her when we are at home..I have these mats that don't let anything go through to the other side so I just place her on the mat and if she decided to pee I just fold it over and it doesn't leak onto our hardwood..The can be washed a zillion times and are big enough that you can fold so your baby can continue to play nude..It is very important for a baby to be naked at least 15 minutes a day as this decreases the chance of a diaper rash..If a baby is in a soiled diaper all day their little bums and such tend to get irritated...My daughter has never even gotten the slightest diaper rash and I've been doing this since she was born and now she is 5 months old..

I'm sure it wouldn't be a bad thing to let your child go without the diaper for a little bit each day, but I'm with you, I have a son who is almost 3 and still in diapers and I couldn't imagine going at all during the day without his on because he would definitely pee everywhere. He drinks so much during the day and I could only imagine what my house would be like if he went without his diaper. Ha.

I will let him roam with out a diaper for about fifteen minutes at a time. I normally make sure he's been to the bathroom before I take the diaper off but if there's an accident it's no big deal. I guess I'm just like it because I really don't find it difficult to get a paper towel and clean it up. I think it's important for kids to "air out" every once in a while.

My son has a very sensitive bottom (he can only use special order Johnsons diapers & wipes) when he was little we would lay/sit him on a cloth diaper or two & let him play off & on for a few hours per day. Now he is 20 months & I just put him in a pair of boxer briefs for 2 or 3 hours in morning & again in the evening, It holds most of the pee when he doesn't make it to his potty (just starting to potty train) But he has never once had any rash since we started doing this, plus their little bottoms need air just the same as women being told to wear cotton panties (for circulation).

Babies don't wear diapers at all or only for a few months in more than 75 different countries around the world. In those cultures, the caregivers respond to their babies natural toiletting signals. In western society the practice is called Elimination Communication. Babies don't like "soiling their nest" so they do things like pee when you take the diaper off and grissle when you put a diaper on. But after a while they start getting interested in other things and forget about trying to signal their need to eliminate if they aren't responded to. If you want to give your son diaper free time, offer him the potty after a feed (hold him over a recepticle with his back against your chest, holding him under the thighs in a squat position) and then you'll have a longer dry period of time.

We started EC with our baby at 3mo, using diapers as backup, but taking baby to the potty after feeds, upon waking and when signalled (pulled on and off breast while feeding, vacant stare, grunting, lifting bottom off ground). Baby's now almost 9mo and only wears diapers for naps and if we are going out and it's been a long time since the last pee.

I did put a few towels down on the floor like after bathtime and let my kids play a little before I put a diaper on them. But I am with you , it's no fun to clean up the mess..LOL. I don't think they mind having the diaper on at all. So long as its dry. As a rule of thumb, I always change the diaper even after one pee in the diaper. I just figure why wait till the diaper is soggy ya know. :)

My son is 16 months old, and I have let him hang loose, frequently, since he was a newborn. Not only just to air out, but to help him to understand his urinary functions(on tile and hard floors). He is already trying to use the toilet..I never intended to actually "potty train". But because he has always been aware that occasionally "water" comes out of his penis and hits the tile floor, and I have always said to him "You went pee pee",and also, "Mommy and daddy go pee pee in the toilet" he now understands and makes the association between peeing and the toilet. I have never urged him to use the toilet, or made any deal at all about him peeing on the floor aside from just telling him what was happening.

Now, when he pees on the floor, he says "Uh oh, and wipes it up with me happily." He will also run to the toilet afterwards and flush it-LOL! No drama, no training, no tears, just life! Diapers are gross, and I limit their use when I can. Aside from that, he has never had a rash! Yeepee!

Yes1 If a baby has diaper rash or just out of the tub or has just went pee, it's OK to let him or her run a bit without the diaper. It has been my experience that baby's love running around bare bottomed! Lol! Just make sure that when company comes over or when the occasion calls the baby is dressed. Also, when a baby runs a fever, I used to let mine go naked for a bit, just to cool him down a little. It's up to you!

yes i think it is great because i thought the same thing it would be like wearing a big pad all the time. yes i let my baby air out, i stay with my mom and her husband has a problem with it he says put a diaper on that boy. but that was the best way to potty train my oldest was to let him run around at the proper time with no diaper. they will make a mess every now and then so be prepared!
