The lubrication oils used in automobile engines and gearbopxes can come from Crude oil (new theory is that it is made from certian chemicals being cpompressd together at very high pressures). Also there are mineral oils compounded in mixtures suitable for lubrication, - and also "synthetic" (-man-made compounds)!

Animal fats are not used for lubrication a lot anymore, - because they become rancid very rapidly, and stink pretty bad! They were used by the pioneers on covered wagons going west , -- and sort of went out with the age!!

Ther are a number of vegetable oils also, - but they are mostly used for cooking and oil lamps, -- corn and olive oil are great lamp fuel, as well as cooking! There are other oils used for cooking also, such as saflower oil, kanola oil, palmoil sunflower oil and others.

Oil of camphor is used in medication along with a bunch of others I can't think of right now!

Then threre is walnut oil used for furniture and fine woods, and linseed oil used for paints. So it depends what oil you want, -- to do what job!

You have to be specific about what kind of oil. Some comes from greasy foreheads. Some comes from decaying organic matter under the earth for hundreds of millions of years. Some comes from pressing corn or olives or coconuts.

Originally oil was harvested from the fat deposits of animals like whales. Petrolium that comes from the ground is large pools of compressed organic material (animals and plants have hydrogen and carbon).
