Well I have 3 chinchillas and 2 gunipigs and they make great pets. Well I only had theme for about a month or so. I will tell you the pros and cons between chinchillas and gunipigs.
Gunipigs
< drink a lot of water which means they pee a lot and should clan out there cage every week
< If they get use to you, I read that they can learn tricks when you give them treats and other stuff
Chinchillas
< Chinchillas are very fragile critters there ribs can break real easily so you don't squeeze them
This is just some knowledge I know about Gunipigs and Chinchillas, Oh my friend had Ferret once and they rally can stink even though they are cool critters to.Chose Wisely!

Do you like to handle your pet?
Do you like to stay up at night?
Can you stand smell?
Do you like noise?
There are a lot more questions to ask you, within that list which would make the best pet for you...
Way to general of a question. I am partial to hamsters (within that list). Though rats are very smart but have a smell no matter how much you bath them! Had a lot of these, warf rats are really neat as pets! Big as kittens and smart. Gerbils are very nice to have around in a family unit (I loved to just watch mine). Chinchillas are spaze cases or the two I had (owner died of aids so I took the pair in). Ferrets I will never own again (I had them when they first came out as pets (when I owned the pet store I got a few in and had one I bought before the store) , they maybe more calm these days?. Guinea pigs make that wonderful squeal when they are happy to see you! They are very easy keepers.
I have had chinchillas, rats, hamsters, Guinea pigs, gerbil, and Ferrets....and a lot of other critters, still do :0)

Chinchillas, rats, and even hamsters can get really temperamental. The rats in particular go wild very quickly and will be the ones most likely to bite. Chinchillas are very jumpy, and hamsters can be a bit brutal at times too. You can only have one hamster per cage, or I promise you there WILL be conflict.
Ferrets are amazing creatures that can be potty-trained like a cat for a litter box. However, they are very curious and you will need an actual leash to keep track of one when it isn't in its cage. They're also very stinky when they potty.
Gerbils will never bite you, and females tend to get along well in groups. I would go with the gerbils if I were you.

Rats are by far the smartest of the bunch if these are the only choices you have, I would chose the rat. The rest have smell issues and are not acceptable for training. Rats can be taught many different things and will learn on their own if you interact with them a lot, reward them with food. Ferrets can learn to do different things also, but have a strong odor to them. They have to be bathed quite frequently if you keep them indoors. All your choices are nocturnal animals. Rats can be active in the day time if you're around. Be sure to keep them in plenty of shavings. A large aquarium with a screen top makes a great cage for them. There are also rat shows, blue rats, hairless rats, etc. Have fun with your new pet!

I personally like Rabbits, and ferrets. Ferrets remind me alot of cats. Very playful, but they are also into EVERYTHING lol... Rabbits I tend to like a bit better, they are low maintenance, and you can litter box train them. Most have great personalities, and are alot of fun. They also get along with cats and dogs. Just a suggestion. Ferrets are a bit stinky. Guinipigs are cute and also low maintenance, but some (to me)are kind of boring. Gerbils I have not had. I like Hamsters, but only ones with good personalities. They are kinda fun, and low maintenance also. They are very cute, but you have to watch them to make sure they don't get away from you. Alot of hamsters I have had bite, but just make sure it's nice before bringing one home. Rats I have had also. They are very intelligent, and will get out through the smallest places. Make sure you have a very secure cage for a rat & hampster for that matter. All are very good pets it just depends on what you are looking for in a pet. Best of Luck!!

I love chinchillas! I wouldn't say they are very easy pets to take care of though. There is ALOT you have to know about them. For example, any little minor thing could kill them. They are very fragile animals. I would think hamsters are the easiest to take care of and the least inexpensive too. Guinea Pigs and Ferrets are fun but they have ALOT of energy. They do need alot of care, though. I don't know anything about rats or gerbils.
I guess it depends on what kind of person you are. Do you want a pet with alot of energy? Or a laid back kind of pet? A pet who doesn't care for too much attention? A pet who lives longer?
I would look up all these animals and how to take care of them, what they need, how frequent they get ill, etc and choose the one that you think is the best fit for you.

I've had over a dozen pet rats since I was a kid, and I must say, they are awesome! Not only do they not bite, they are also extremely clean, (only using the bathroom in their cage) very loyal, and incredibly smart. The bad thing about them is that they don't have very long lifespans, typically 2 and a half to 3 years. I've had horrible experiences with guinea pigs and hamsters, who bite, and tend to cannibalize their young.

Out of those choices I say the rat. We had a lot of pets growing up and the rats we had were always really great. We had guinipigs that were afraid of everything (and smelled BAD!), hamsters that bit, ferrets that smelled worse than the guinepigs. But we had two rats and they were both really great.
But if you're not limited to those, get a cat ;)

OMG def. a RAT!! Greatest rodent EVER!! All mine know their name and you can train them to do sooo many things. They all have very different personalities and love to shoulder surf.
They take a lot of work and the vet is sometimes needed, so if you want a rat, look up how to take care of them like with any pet. And they can also be litter trained. They are just like ferrets, but rats. They do the same things!
*Edit: And NO rats do NOT bite!! Hamster bite more than rats! The only time a rat has ever bitten me was when she was defending her babies!
Good luck and remember... rats rule!!
