I would render a guess soccer is less popular in the states do the fact that there is more oportunities in other sports. Added to that, soccers popularity of any sort in the states is a relatively new thing, while other sports like baseball, basketball and football have long been established. Plus Americans tend to say soccer is a slow, boring game, while not really fully understanding it.
Hope that answers your question.

It has just never caught on here. It can't compete with American football, basketball, or baseball for our collective attention. Personally, I find soccer to be rather boring, frankly. Too little in the way of scoring; too much just watching guys jog around after the ball. Also not really helping soccer's image are the racial chants and the like that seem to plague the European game. I also don't like the fact that everytime a player is touched by an opposing player he goes down like he's been shot. Too much diving, too little scoring, too many racist fans. I'm certainly not implying that there are no racist sports fans here in the states, but the sheer scale of some of the incidents within soccer just boggles my mind. Most galling is the lack of any real effort by the powers that be of soccer to stop such repugnant displays.

The reason Soccer is so popular the world over is because it is a relatively easy game to learn and to play. Unlike American Football and Basketball, in Soccer you don't need to be a certain size or have a certain strength level to play at a high level. It's a game almost anyone can play who has halfway decent running skills and stamina...

Mostly because people from any other country that the U.S. don't have the combination of size and athletic ability that it takes to be good at football. The average size (both Height and Weight) of an American for instance is about 20 pounds heavier than Europeans. If European countries decided to take up football and compete against Americans they might actually die on the field! The other reason soccer isn't big here is it is low scoring and and overall just boring all together.

'Soccer' is well liked by Americans as a game but it will never 'go national' because the tv companies dont like it. There are not enough intervals for advertising, just think 45 minutes without a break for the ads.
Another possible reason it is not popular could be that analists and commentators just cant get as excited about a 0-0 result as we do here in UK.

HAHA third countries?? Europe is the central of football and I don't think any of them are the third country. South American is the other football central as well.
The reason why it's not so popular in the States simply because they have attached with their NFL for ages. To think about it again, since when we played football with hands?
But as far as I know MLS is keeping it's progress now, several American players has invaded European leagues, you can find them among English Premiership clubs till Bundesliga of Germany.

It is Huge for kids leagues . Kids as young as 4 love it. Never mind that the back field is practicing somersaults while the ball is somewhere near the opponents goal or sometimes it does not matter which goal they kick it into. Kids have to stop and wave to everybody no matter what is going on. It is a scream!! Professionally though it is dull.
Though, I have to say I never understood all the interest American football at any age.

i think our yanky cousins didnt like the idea of being beaten by any other nation that had been playing a sport already so they just decided to invent their own games (world series? only north american teams playing in it). only kidding .
i think it has a lot to do with the tv companys not getting enough time to air their adverts. to say soccer is slow when you compare the amount of time outs and stopages to question official calls from the referee is just barmy.
no offence to our american cousins but a lot of those athletes did'nt get to the size they are with just moms home cooking either.
i think the yanks just love a metaphor for war when they are watching their sports hence all the 80's padded shoulders and bike helmets lol

I think it is because Americans dont mind violence in their favorite sport.. all other countries want to be violent about their sport... thus the rioting after a soccer match. But if you watch closely, soccer is becoming more popular here, and violence in the streets after a game/during is happening.

I query whether this statement is correct. Yes, in Europe and South America it probably is, but in India, China, USA (as stated), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, etc, etc, it is not. Perhaps it has something to do with the climate. Our long winters are suited to 'football'.
