6x-8=104

Why?

Well, read my answer STEP BY STEP and do it with me.

Okay there are code words here.
First: the word "is" means equal, so substitute the equal sign.

then "times" means multiplication, right?
So six "times" a number means a number times 6.

a number? what do they mean by that? Well, that would be the unknown, so let's just call that "x."

So what is left? "Eight less"

"less" means subtraction.

Well, now let's put it in the right order, ok?

I gave you the answer of 6x -8 =`104, right?

Well, usually when it says "less than," it will not go first.

There are three parts of this problem, so that means it has to be in the middle spot because obviously the "is" part is last.

Hope that made sense.

Now that you have your equation, now you solve for "X"

6x-8=104 is the problem.
You want to isolate the "x," right?

Think of a see-saw (the ones kids play on), and think of the middle point of the see-saw as the equal sign.

What ever we want to do on the left, we must do the same thing on the right.

Let's look at the left side: 6x-8
Now, if you look at it, this left side has two parts, ok?
The 6x and the -8

Let's get rid of the -8 by doing the opposite to it, which is a positive 8 ........so.....

6x-8+8 = 6x (why? the -8+8 cancelled itself out)

Ok now REMEMBER, whatever you do to the left side, you must do to the right side.

We are left with 6x =104and we must add a positive 8 to the right side of the equal sign
(computing that will be 104 plus 8 equals 112

So now we are left with

6x=112

Now what?

Well, remember we are still wanting to isolate the "x," so we gotta get rid of that 6 next to it

6x is a multiplication problem, right? So what is the opposite of multiplication? Yes!! Division

Let's divide 6x by 6............. and if you do that, you are left with 6!!! (why? the sixes cancel each other out and you are left with just "x")

Now you have divide by 6 on the other side of the equal side too.

112 divided by 6 = 18.6666666666..... (on calculator)

But that will round off to 18.66

so x=18.66

or x= 18 and 2/3 (if you do the division by hand)

eight less means -8
six times a number means 6X
so eight less than six times a number is 6X - 8

eight less than six times a number is 104
6X - 8 = 104
6X = 112
x = 18 2/3
