This is serious. (Not like emergency-room serious, but like get an appointment with your doctor as soon as you can--type of serious). It depends a lot as to whether the blood is bright red, darker and mixed with the stool, or black stool (which most people wouldn't recognize as blood). Or whether it's just flecks or streaks, and do you have any pain? In any case, what to do is see your physician. Any GP or FP will do, but if you happen to have a gastroenterologist handy, go to him.

If the blood is red, it is likely from rectal bleeding or a hemorrhoid. Rectal bleeding is commonly caused by straining too hard, or from hard stools. Preparation H and increased intake of water and fiber usually clears this up in a few days.
If the blood is very dark - almost black or purple, then the bleeding is coming from higher in the digestive system, which indicates a more serious problem that should be checked out by a doctor.

Was it red spots? Because if it's red spots, it's more than likely from "fishers". Fishers are little cracks in the skin around the anus. If your bowel movement was forced or it was to large to pass it forces your anus to stretch and a little bit of blood might pass on top of your movement. If your stool is totally BLACK, then it has lots of blood in it and it's time to get to a clinic or hospital. If you are in any pain, get help A.S.A.P.
