I had severe migraines for many years. The first step is to see your doctor and rule out any medical reasons. eg brains scans etc (your doctor can tell you more if he hasnt already) if there is no physical reason then look further. Diets, stress, environment(weather) food can can cause migraines. Try talking to a natropath. By myself doing the above mentioned and then seeing a natropath it was discovered i was allergic to Chocolate. Also when my head got too hot, eg wearing hats in hot weather, fast hot exercise where the blood pressure rises quickly would trigger migraines. Since eliminating chocolate and following an exercise routine that did not elevate the blood pressure quickly, i very rarely have migraines.
I had to be cautious when eating out as chocolate is added to a lot of things without you even realising it. Even the local coffee shop with the cappuchino machine added a small amount of choc in the auto machine.
A lot of other foods are also known to trigger migraines.
Some Prescribed pills for treatment can also make the migraines worse (depending on the person) Needs the be regulated and monitored by your doctor.
Some types of the pill can cause migraines, so usually swapping to a pill with a lower dose of hormones will help (once again needs doctor assessment)
This is very long winded but there are many factors to migraines and if you start with the basics u can eliminate 1 thing at a time.
Mine took 8 years to get under control.
But there are still migraine sufferers with no explanation. Doctors or natropaths for that matter can still not identify all the causes of migraines. EG Environment, food additives, chemicals the list is endless)
\Cheers

The first issue is to make sure it is a migraine and not a headache. there are several triggering factors for migraines including: stress, family history, genetics, and of course Diet sodas. The sugar substitute used in diet sodas has been linked to migraines as well as brain tumors. If you are under the age of 21 taking excess amount of Excedrin for migraines can cause Reyes syndrome. Also it can cause severe liver damage, especially if you suffer from migraines for extended periods. Eventually the Excedrin will stop helping and you will keep taking more and more until you overdose (in case of severe chronic migraines). The thing that is beneficial to most suffering from migraines is called hyperventilation. Here is what you need to do next time you have a migraine: take a brown paper bag cover you mouth and nose in the bag opening and breath in and out five times quickly and then take slow deep breathes. Be careful however because some have a tendency to pass out from hyperventilation. I have suffered migraines for years, I was forced to cut out diet soda, caffeine, coffee, and stress (hard to do at most times).

A migraine is generally triggered by swelling somewhere in your head. I've been getting horrible migraines for years and I find only two things help. One is hydrating. I say this because 80% of headaches are caused by dehydration. The second is rest. I know it's hard to do when it hurts almost as much to close them as it does to have them open, but I used to take pills to sleep. Mine were so bad I'd be sleeping for days but it's all good.

Try resting and sleeping, and try drinking either water or gatorade or powerade. No caffiene.

I'd like to know what kind of pills you're taking for migraines. Generall speaking migraine relief pills are either painkillers, muscle relaxants or blood thinners. If you're taking a pain killer it's going to depend on what you're taking. Stuff like morphine, percoset and oxycodon are very powerful drugs and can stop your heart if you abuse them. Muscle relaxants like nortriptolene shouldn't be affecting your heart at all. Blood thinners like aspirins will generally improve the blood flow and that can only benefit your heart.

As for the birth control pills, that's going to depend on what you're taking. Ask a doctor.

I take Maxalt. It dissovles under the tongue and works very quickly. It is a perscription. It does tell you that if you have a known heart problem , not to take the med. I cannot take any birth control meds- it does increase the amount of migraines I have. As far as preventing Migraines- (especially being prone to having them) easier said than done. It should be simple: Eat right, get plenty of sleep, exercise, and don't stress over everything. I hope this helped. Take Care!

I take Excedrine migraine at the first sign of one coming. Usually kicks in about half an hour later. If it still persists, I use an ice pack on the head/neck and lie down in the dark. Still there? 500mg of Neoprene (Alleve).

Gotta watch out for Excedrine Migraine, don't get in the habit of taking that stuff. As far as birth control pills, haven't heard of any problems mixing the two.

I have suffered from severe migraine headaches most of my adult life. Finally, I went to see a neurologist, who prescribed Topomax. I haven't had a migraine in almost a year. There are some risks of developing kidney stones if you don't consume alot of water. Also, this medication can cause Metabolic Acidosis that results in weight loss. I don't know where I would be without this medicine. I suggest seeing a neurologist to find out if this would be the right option for you.

Migrane medication and bc pills do not have an interaction so you are safe there. but usually a precription and lost of rest in a dark room will help it go away. If it gets to be really bad and lasts longer than a day def go to the er because there can be a major related problem.
