What's the cheapest way to get from Sydney to Christchurch, NZ?

I found a cheap flight to Sydney, but that's as far as it takes me.
I need to go to Christchurch. I looked up plane prices, but was wondering if maybe there were boats or ferries that went there and would be cheaper.

I'm planning on going to Christchurch around the beginning of Jan..... the 10th maybe.
I got a ticket to Sydney, but was wondering if there was a cheap way to get to Christchurch besides plane.
Planning on staying for about 2 months, need to save as much as I can on the travel.

In response to SAGE also: I ALSO think you are ignorant and offensive. The most likely situation is that kittykat IS from NZ. We're just such a small country that we don't get a whole Yahoo tag thing- that's why it says all of our questions were asked in the US, while actually, they're not! kittykat (if she is from NZ..) may have been effected by this earthquake, everyone in NZ knows someone who knows someone. You are possibly being a little bit insensitive here... You are ignorant in that you yourself are not as knowledgeable as you seem to think you are. This was in CHRISTCHURCH, not NZ'S capital, Wellington.. The comments you make about Americans not having seen the world, being plastic, and caring too much about the Oscars are also offensive. In any case, how is that relevant at all? The asker is showing interest in the outside world, showing that they care about everything that's happening in Christchurch. I think you're taking this all the wrong way. There is no need to accuse kittykat of having no life. It really is a genuine question and I don't think anyone is trying to make light out of the fact that people have died. Obviously it is horrific, obviously everybody here is mourning, for this is a day that will go down in NZ history. I guess it's just interesting to see how far and fast news is spread, although I guess in these times of technology, it is safe to say that everybody knows everything!

I'd deffo say one of the budget no frills airlines is yur best bet mate. At the moment jetstar looks about yur cheapest but check around and maybe go to the airport to enquire about best last minute deals direct from airlines? Good Luck Mate, have a Gooday & a Bonza Christmas In Sydney!

$386 Air New Zealand December 2006 to Christchurch air seems cheapest.

jetstar have the cheapest flights. if you get easily dehydrated i wouldnt recomment this as they don't even give you water(due to cheapness). if you're afraid of flying then you should take a boat, then you can drink as much as you want lol
