Price doesn't matter. What matters is what the idea is behind the gift. If you give someone a gift and it is judged by its physical value, the individual you gave it too needs to be re evaluated as a friend.
I personally like gifts with no dollar value. My husband and I work a lot (me two jobs, him one). We now have a three 1/2 month old and for Christmas, I just want to spend it with my family. Not at work. That would be the best gift of all, along with a healthy, fulfilling 2007.

I really think it depends who the present is for. If it is for someone you are not really close to, I would say under $20. If it is a friend who are close to then I would say around $30. Family can be more. If you don't have a lot of money to spend, there are plenty of things you can do that don't cost a lot.

It would depend who and for what...
My Mom for her birthday - $50.00
A good friend's wedding - $100.00
My kid at Christmas - $200.00 (total)
a co-worker's birthday $15 - $20
a house warming present 4 somebody who moves all the time $0

it all depends on who you are going to give...of course if you feel that the person who received is important for you...so it is more likely to be more expensive.....average price is 20-25 bucks....
