Effeacement is the thinning of the cervix (the opening of the uterus). This happens when the body is readying itself for birth, but diferent women effeace at diferent times and at diferent rates.
You can just be a good sis and tell her she'll be fine and do great at being a birthin' mama! Just let her know there is no judgement from you about the way she does it - her way is the best way!

Effacement is the shortening, or thinning, of the cervix before or during early labor. As effacement takes place, the cervix then shortens, or effaces, pulling up into the uterus and becoming part of the lower uterine wall. Effacement may be measured in percentages, from zero percent (not effaced at all) to 100 percent, which indicates a paper-thin cervix. It is normal development before or during the labor. Call her and tell her how much you love her and hoe much you enjoy the fact that you will be aunt soon.

The closer you get to the end of your pregnancy, the more you will hear about "being effaced," "effacing," or "effacement."
What is effacement?
Effacement is the process by which the cervix prepares for delivery. After the baby has engaged in the pelvis, it gradually drops closer to the cervix; the cervix gradually softens, shortens and becomes thinner. You may hear phrases like "ripens," or "cervical thinning" which refer to effacement.
How is effacement measured?
Effacement is measured in percentages. For example, your doctor or midwife may tell you that you are effaced 50%, which means you are half way to being completely effaced. When you are 100% effaced or completely effaced, your cervix is paper-thin and labor is right around the corner.
How will I know if and when I am effaced?
In your final weeks of pregnancy your caregivers will routinely check for effacement, and as soon as you arrive at the hospital, you will be checked for effacement. If you are a first time mom, your cervix will efface before it dilates. If you are a second time mom, your cervix will dilate before effacement.

Ditto to previous person.. there are a couple things the docs tell you when you are in labor - how far dialted and the [percertage you are effaced... and the station is another... that tells the mother how far into the birth cancel the baby is.. starts at -2 I believe and goes to +2.. I believe either 0 or 1 is crowing....
