........slowly but surely...?
We are now witnessing a growing Latin American far left "coalition."
Hugo Chavez (up again for re-election)-- Venezuela; Daniel Ortega -- Nicaragua; Alvaro Uribe -- Bogota; Alfredo Palacio --, Ecuador, (who promises to close the remaining US base there.)
Past U.S. intervention in Latin America often has proved to be counterproductive. America spent much of the Cold War supporting brutal and corrupt dictators – Somoza, Duvalier, Batista, and others. U.S. pressure often created resentment; Washington managed to turn a minor dictator into major international figure when it annointed Fidel Castro as its Latin American Enemy Number One. Now Washington has similarly aided Chavez, paying him far too much attention.
Chavez has led and continues to lead a rather strong “coalition of its own.
Does anyone foresee wicked problems to the south, fueled by oil in the not too distant future?
Is Chavez to be taken more seriously?

No one is paying all that much attention, because it doesn't matter all that much.

Chavez is toast the next time the price of oil drops (commodity prices go up and down), since that idiot actually thinks socialism works. He is an insignificant military power and a temporary regional economic power. He uses the USA as a Straw Man in his rhetoric, and that won't work when his policies fail, as they eventually will. He will probably become a dictator if he didn't rig the last election (a matter of debate), and if he becomes too egregious in his sins against his own country, we might step in. Or not.

Did you call Álvaro Uribe leftist? Are you crazy? And the president of Ecuador that will close the remaining US base there is not Alfredo Palacio, but the ellected president: Rafael Correa. And although I'm not leftist I think he is right, should we allow a foreign and not friendly country have a base in our country?

It has been rumored that he would love to move in and grab Cuba when Castro goes. Doubtful though.
Sincerely feel sorry for people living in those South American countries.
