Maybe he feels like when someone stomps on his pride it feels like they're trying to destroy him.

Someone that would beat a person to death over pride is using that as an excuse.They are just angry with themselves and are using pride for vindication reasoning.Actually they are social paths and belong behind bars or put to death according to the law in which state they live.If he was proud of who he is he would ignore ignorance.

When you are really poor either financially or mentally (education wise), there is only one thing left in your life, it is called your pride.
Something that is often taught among my poor white trash relatives here in the south: "Well, I may be poor, but I have my pride."
My major was International Relations, one thing we learned about revolutions was that they do not occur because people are being oppressed, they occur when people have something that they are proud of, and then the dictator takes even that away from them.
Now back to your question: When a man is down on his luck and has only his pride left, then when you insult him, he fears that his pride is being threatened, then he gets what we call in the south "fighting mad". --- In other words he revolts against his offender, and he revolts against the law of the land, and he revolts against his respect for human life.

Most people, men & women, allow there anger to control there actions, they possibly have not been taught how to walk away by there provider ( Mother, Father, caregiver). It takes a bigger man to walk away then to fight. Maybe he was beaten as a child & thats all they know to do. We learn what we live! Most people that are in prison are very angry people & do not know any thing else to do. Most people that are in prison are very insecure about themselfs, they just don't know this until they are in & around even worse people. To walk away is the bravest thing a person can do.
