After you do a load of laundry, leave the lid up for a few hours to let all the moisture evaporate. if you don't, you end up with a mold problem and the musty smell.

Use a cup of bleach in a front loader and 2 cups in top loaders that use a greater amount of water. Put washer in normal to heavy duty and let it go. All washers never completly remove all the water from tub. You will always have approx. a gallon of water in there at all times. This will cause mold growth and odor. How bad really depends on your water and temps in the house and how well your door or lid is sealed after left shut. Its not a bad idea to leave up sometimes.

When I do a load of wash I add Borax with the detergent. The wash comes out cleaner and the washer smell sweeter. Also you might want to leave the top up or the door open if it's a front loader.

Take 2 Cups of Vinegar and do a small wash with no clothes in the tub, and let it run through the cycle. Do this every 3 to 4 months. It cleans the hose residue and the machine residue that's left behind.

Just a few drops of bleach in the wash will fix your problem, and be healthier for you.
