During the process of mitosis, the daughter cells will each have the same number of chromosome as the original cell.

This differs from the process of meiosis (or gametogenesis), where the daughter cells (gametes) will only have half the number of the original cell so that they can participate in sexual reproduction.

however this is not true when mutations occur (abnormal situation) at a structural level with loss or addition of genetic material.
