The double L in Spanish is pronounced "Y". But let's face it - most foreign words have a double life, being pronounced both the authentic and the transplanted way side-by-side, depending even where the speaker is. For example, I have a friend who has a salsa band. When I go to their rehearsals, even though English is the language used the most there, we often speak Spanish and use the proper pronunciations. Yet when my friend and I are speaking in other places (and he's from Honduras and is Spanish) we often pronounce Spanish words like gringos do.

Being that he's from a Spanish speaking country he probably thinks you mean the "llama" Which is a Spanish word for "called" or "named" the 2 "L"'s are pronounced lyc a "Y" so It would sound lyc Yama. Even though he knows it's a llama that's the way they pronounce the word. The Word llama In English is an animal. The first "L" is silent....as you already know.;) Sound Confusing?? hehehe
