Statistics are used for funding and for developing programs that are implemented in schools. Unfortunately, a lot of the research in the educational field is not as scientifically based as people think. Just as unfortunate is the desire of so many to jump on bandwagons and use educational trends rather than use what really works in the classroom. If used as part of a whole, educational statistics can be a useful tool for teachers, administrators, and curriculum specialists.

Most educational decisions are data based or driven decisions. That means if you change something the change is based on data or evidence ie statistics. If you want to see improvement you test to see where the students are before you start and at key points along the way. That data tells the teachers if what they are doing is actually working.

Primarily in assessment, when teachers collect marks for the work you completed and then compile those marks to create a picture of students' educational performance. If collected and interpreted properly, those marks can also be used to identify areas of teaching strength and weakness. As well, good teachers stay up-to-date with current reserach and have to interpret a lot of statistical information in published academic journals. Looking at statistical information (especially when represented in numeric table format) was one of the biggest challenges for me when I started my Bachelor of Education degree. Despite already having an undergraduate degree, I found that I wasn't prepared to be interpreting those types of stats.

Lots of people in educational research aren't really scientists so they have a lot of cute ways to use stats.

A limited study is done in one setting with a lot of general assumptions. Then it is applied too broadly to situations that don't make sense. It fails. Another study is erected in its place.
