Both parties are full of greedy, lying, self serving *******. So dont' think about democrat and republican. What you really askin is are you a liberal or a conservative. Conservative=generally favors free markets, traditional values, strong foreign defense, small govern't, less govern't assistance.
Liberal=contends that society must protect liberty and opportunity for all citizens. In the process, it accepts some restrictions in economic affairs, such as anti-trust laws to combat economic oligopolies, regulatory bodies or minimum wage laws, intending to secure economic opportunities for all. It also expects legitimate governments to provide a basic level of welfare or workfare, health and education, supported by taxation, intended to enable the best use of the talents of the population, prevent revolution, or simply for the perceived public good. Most Intelligent people are not all conservative or all liberal, most people are a combination of both. You can be very Conservative on some subjects while you may be Liberal on others. Be an independant person, its the best way to go.

This is something you should look into. Find out what you believe and find which group is more closely aligned with that belief system. You may agree with a candidate of a different party, that is fine, you (if you are eligible) should be voting and having a say so in your future. It does sound silly, educate yourself. Generally Democrats are for more social programs to help all people, and are generally liberal. Republicans are more about people doing for themselves rather than relying on the government, and are mostly conservative.

Not silly at all. I took both of Eric's tests, and it confirmed my position, basically. My advice is give Eric ten points, and be independent. Read as much as you can from various viewpoints and make your own decisions. Then vote for the candidate that best represents you, whether they have a D or R behind their name.
BTW, the test showed be to be a Libertarian, which is essentially correct, but I will continue to be open minded and Independent.
The problem is one party isn't going to be totally representative of me, so even if I were to claim to be Libertarian, I can't totally back them because there are some social and economic issues that require government involvement.
Sorry, enough about me. Point is don't get wrapped up in political labels. Otherwise, you will have a narrow myopic view of the world. Make decisions based on conscience and morality, and then vote on the candidate that will best represent your views.

The quiz that Eric points out at http://www.politicalcompass.org is an accurate/valid website--political scientist approved.
Note that political parties really exist to monopolize money and get people elected that will have strings attached. We should be able to rely on a party to do the work for us and then vote the party line but it isn't that easy if you are in the know.
If you really want to decide where to place your vote, check how the current office holder for your territory has voted on legislation and determine if you want to hire (vote for) or terminate (by voting for someone else) the representative during the next election. Don't rely on party politics and don't get swept up in all the media BS and cheerleading that the knuckleheads on both sides have been undertaking. Use the link below for voting records of representatives--they are not always what you would think based on party or what is said on TV.

JFK Thats John F. Kennedy was a democrat. President Bush has pretty much the same viewpoints as JFK did. Why is it that democrats and republicans cant agree on anything. If anything we need a lot less republicans AND democrats and get some people with common sense. Oh sorry I guess thats asking too much.

You are not silly, just interested in what is going on around you. The best path for you is to start from where you are and select those options that will take you where you want to go. What are you / What do you want to be?
Evaluate your prospects, your talents, abilities, opportunities, desires, and dreams. Are you strong enough to make choices for yourself? Is there enough wisdom in your heart to provide the guidance than you need to make the best choices?
Do you think that rules and rulers, traditions, authorities, and ancient texts will tell you everything you need to know in order to decide what to do? Or do you believe that what is best in today's world, for the most people, may not be found in the past. Is the right path to the future found by avoiding the mistakes of the past, or trying new ideas and technologies that may be dangerous and threatening to the environment or to humanity - no matter what the possible benefits?
You have many paths to the future and it is up to you to choose. Each choice you make will open many doors and close others forever. Does this reality frighten you or energize you to seek a better future for yourself and your children?
My advice is to choose a path where you can love and be loved by yourself, your family, your community, your nation, and your world. Avoid paths taken in fear.
In voting for what is best for yourself, place yourself in the circle of reality. Don't listen to fear mongers. They are like the drivers of tigers who only seek you as a prize.
You are a human being with an ancient heritage which goes deep into the past. Your kind has sought the path to the future for 15,000 years. Your blood is rich in human history and glory. Honor it. Your future is rich in all the wonderful things that you and people like you will create in it.
Will you take your place in the story of human history? Find out who you are! Decide what you want. Choose. Don't be afraid.

You have to state where you stand on issues. Without knowing, I would say Republican. When Republicans run as conservatives, they win landslides. Most Americans's values are in-line with what Republicans stand for, not necessarily do when elected.

You don't have to be either. When an election comes around decide what issues are important to you and vote for the person who best reflects your attitudes. You can't go wrong if you vote with your heart and doesn't matter what side of the political scale that person falls on.
