Where are these bald spots? Guinea pigs have natural, small bald spots behind their ears. Other than that, they should have no bald spots (unless you have a hairless guinea pig! I'm assuming you do not).

It sounds like he may have mites, which is a common, but painful condition. Little tiny microscopic bugs burrow underneath the skin of the guinea pig causing extreme pain and itching. Sometimes the pain is so bad that guinea pigs can have seizures. If left untreated, it can cause death as the guinea pig may stop eating completely because he is so miserable. Guinea pigs with mites also tend to scratch so much that they actually scratch through their skin causing open sores and missing hair.

Good news is that it is a very common parasite and is very cheap and easy to treat. You will want to take your pig to a vet, though, in case something else is going on. Check out the link below for more information. Many guinea pig owners treat new guinea pigs for mites regardless if they are showing symptoms or not. The treatment will not hurt him if it turns out he doesn't have mites.

Guinea pigs are very prone to scurvy, they can not make their own Vitamin C and the Vitamin C might be expired in their food, it doesnt have a long shelf life. The first thing you usually see is hair loss. make sure you have vitamins to put in their food and or water to suppliment this natrual dificiancy, you can also feed them veggies that have high vitamin c levels like red peppers.

They are also prone to mites, This can cause them to scratch to the point of hair loss. You need to take them to the vet to get a shampoo to help with this. Or a medication. But I would first see if the pig has scurvy.

Sometimes it depends on what bedding he has in his cage. If you are using shavings of wood, make sure it is pine and not cedar. If you use the dusty shavings, he may be getting mites. Mites are very tiny and bite as they dig down into its skin causing itching. Your pig scratches and causes him to lose its hair. The cage should be changed often because ammonia will build up from urine. Vitamin C is good to use. Donot use vitamin C for humans. Ask your vet for advice.

if you just got him he is under allot of stress and may be reacting by scratching allot or pulling his hair out like a bird moulting. give him a little while to get used to his new surroundings and he will calm down if not call a vet, it might be a more serious underlying condition. or he just might have fleas or mites.
