I found my largest hermit crab earlier today, with what looked like his dead body hanging out of the shell. But once I pulled the skin away, I found that he shed his skin and is now very small and pink within the shell. I'm not sure what to do now, this is the first time that one of my hermit crabs actually did this.

I was wondering if I should take any special measures or what have you, or if this is a replacement for moving into a new shell.

hermit crabs will change shells as they grow. you should keep a selection of different size shells on hand and in the tank with it so it can choose its own new home.

I guess you should be trying to protect him. Does he use sea-shells? If so, give him a sea-shell for shelter.
