A little over 6 months ago I sprained my ankle. During this time it has continuted to hurt and swell when I use it a lot. I had an MRI done and found out that there are still some ligaments that are torn. Is surgery the only way to repair them?

My doctor is making an appointment with me to see an Orthopedist...unfortunatley it takes a few weeks to get in. I was just wondering what I could expect from the appointment.

I have already had physical therapy... when the injury initially occured. Surgery is not my 1st course of action either, but so far nothing as worked and i am still in pain/swelling.

i would strongly suggest getting a second and possibly even a third opinion. it's possible that you may be able to strengthen the surrounding tissues by going to physical therapy and may be able to avoid surgery altogether.

Ligamentous injuries are problematic because they will limit your mobility pretty significantly if you want to treat them correctly. What a ligament is is a strong band of connective tissue that helps to stabilize a joint, in your case, your ankle. Ligaments provide the support and connections that keep the bones of the joint in appropriate contact. When a ligament is torn, the joint may become unstable (depending on the number and which ligaments are torn). It may not require surgery to fix, but if it can be healed non-operatively, you're probably looking at at least six weeks in a brace that completely immobilizes the joint and non-weight bearing status. The fact that this is an old injury may make long term outcome worse than if it was addressed sooner. Definitely trust what your orthopedic surgeon tells you about this. If he recommends surgery to fix it, I would do it. It would be awful to lose the function of your ankle due to non-treatment.

As you already know ligaments due not have their own blood supply so it takes a lot longer to heal. Did you try vibration therapy to bring blood into that area? Also what type of sprain was it? First, second or third? Thirds on most account need surgery to reattach ligaments. Have you tried massage therapy? To help with the pain and increase range of motion of the ankle?

No.
Torn ligaments do not heal, unfortunately.
The Orthopedist will give you some options.
Wear an angle brace, perhaps.
The best solution may be the surgery to repair the torn ligaments.
Use Ice and some heat to reduce the swelling and pain.
Many of us are faced with injuries...some very serious.
These injuries affect our quality of Life. I love to dance.
I can not imagine not dancing because of an injured ankle.
Best to you.

Surgery should not be your first course of treatment especially for an ankle sprain. Over time the ligament will heal but unfortunately will always be more loose than what it was previously. I would advise going to see a Physical Therapist to help you build your strength up as well as improve your balance, agility and dynamic strength.
