I want a few nice, new clothes that are casual and classic. What should I pick? If I could pick one trendy item, what should it be?

Go for classics that won't go out of style. Some nice black pants, a trench coat, pumps with a matching bag/purse, a good pair of well fitting khakis or jeans, lots of basic v or crew neck t-shirts in basic colors so they can match with anything.
As for trendy items...honestly there is nothing right now on the trendy market considered classic. Since when has a trench coat or a good pair of pants gone out of style like leggings and tunics and bell bottoms have?

Gap always has clothes that are casual, classic and yet updated to reflect current trends without making you look like a fashion victim. Get a pair of dark denim bootcut jeans, a pair of nice black or dark grey dressy pants, a couple of versatile tees in colors that flatter your face, a black skirt in a flattering a-line cut, a great white button-down shirt and two or three great sweaters--a cardigan and turtleneck for sure. Also, you might want a cute, lady-like peacoat or wool 3/4 length coat. If you buy one trendy item, go to Forever 21 for a cute trendy top--like a v-neck tunic--that will go with your more classic pieces and add some flair to your outfits!

* cashmere cable in a versatile neutral that flatters you. if you live in a warm climate do a cashmere silk cotton blend.
* a great coat (single breasted for less bulk)
* dark, slightly bootcut jeans without any ostentatious details
* try a tan suede bag because you can carry this all year around

* oversized purse is very practical, you can carry everything!
