We're developing a wireless product (one component is fixed and another component is mobile) that has to perform at high speeds. Do you have any suggestions on how to move a mobile component (size and weight of a match-box) at speeds of 160mph next to the (i.e. ~10ft away from) fixed component in order to perform some tests? For example, driving a speedy car at a specific place (I'm in San Francisco area), or using some other method?

You could take the fixed component and fix it to a vehicle as well. Then, your problem is 80 mph, with each vehicle going in the opposite direction. As for location, I'd say Salt Lake flats.

Or...

Fixed wing small aircraft. 160 mph is perfect speed. Device could either be in the plane or lowered/tethered and could zoom past fixed site either on the ground or up a tower, hill, or cliff.

I was thinking an airplane until I read your details. However, here is a down and dirty method for you. You will need open space, and a backstop would be a good idea. Mount your device on an Estes model rocket. They come in many designs. I'm sure you can find one that will hit 160 mph. To ensure that it stays horizontal, and flies in a straight line, you could wire guide it using loops fastened to the side.

Just an impulsive thought, could work.

Build a device similar to a rotary horse walker or centrifuge like astronauts train in... put the movable part at the end of the boom and the stationary device at the center and crank it up to 160 mph. You can also buddy up to a stock car or motorcycle racing team and use them to help test the equipment.
