isn't it all pretty much luck, fate, chance or whatever you want to call it that determines our outcomes?

in my own life...all my best intentions fall flat...my hard work is for naught...and all around me, i see people that do nothing and because of "who they know" or just sheer "dumb luck" win every time...

I think much too often success and virtue are non related .
As the old saying goes nice guys come in last.
I would say luck and evil such as greed, deceit and false facades .
No good deed goes unpunished.
Good intentions pave the road to hell.
A good attitude is unfairly taken advantage of .
The harder one works the less they are paid.

no, it's the choices we make and the way we approach things....how would the negative of those three attributes produce something positive? success by definition is simply achieving a goal or producing a desired result. How many people do you know with a completely negative attitude, who have bad intentions, and are lazy and don't want to work for anything, who have achieved "success"?....if you quit your job, sit your a** on the couch, respond negatively to everyone and try to deliberately sabotage people, is that "luck, fate, chance"?

What you see may be biased, you're only one person.
I think the 'proof is in the pudding', and that consistant effort and the other positive traits you mention do result in success (the reaching of a desired goal). Frequently, other people see or hear of our efforts, our reputation may preceed us in some situation we've yet to reach.
However, there's no denying that human nature will move people to favor whom they will, based on the arbitrary choice of a person in a position of power. As the saying goes, "life isn't fair."

I don't think that we are discussing success as in a gross amount of money. I think we mean success as in a good life where you will never be poor and life will be good to you. I have a lot of bad breaks in my life, but I have a good attitude and so my life is very successful. I have 3 children who love me despite the fact that 2 have serious illnesses and they have good attitudes so they are also successful in their friendships. So, it all depends on you and how willing you are to have faith and work hard.

I do think that hard work, good attitude, and good intentions do pay off. I also believe in the old saying, "it's not what you know, but rather who you know". Alot of success and chances are made because of connections that you have with people.

I guess it all depends upon what you perceive to be success.
In your view, is it external superficial achievements?
These people that you see who seem to "win big every time" what are they truly achieving?
Perhaps they accumulate great wealth or climb up a social or corporate ladder by superficial means.
Does any of that really matter? Does it make them happy, does it add meaning to their lives with fulfilment.

Could success not be something that you define from within yourself, a set of personal goals that you place for yourself, on a daily basis, that you strive for and achieve?

Success is whatever you define it to be.

I'm sure that luck plays into it but I don't believe in fate. Most ambitous people make their own luck though. You try, you fail. You get up again and you try again. You fail again you get right back up and try again. The winners are the ones that never quit trying. The quitters are the ones that become the losers.

Not to many people it is. People suceed when they go for it. When they work at it. You have to work to get better at things. Most people aren't born with amazing gifts and if you just let luck control your destiny then well I see an uneventful future.
