If price isn't an issue, go with the PS3. It's better technology and Sony has developers like nobody's business. There was no shortage of PSX games, no shortage of PS2 games and you can bet there won't be a shortage of games for the PS3 either. I also find XBox is a little more adult oriented. If you go with the XBox, he'll want XBox Live which is the online gaming service. I don't know how concerned you or the parents are with mature content, but people can be pretty nasty online.

Mind you, you'll have a tough time getting a PS3 for MSRP ($500 for the basic model and $600 for the premium). Unless you get insanely lucky, you'll be stuck paying $1,000+ (Sometimes + a lot) on eBay.

If that's too much, the 360 is a good, solid choce too. Especialy if he's over 15 or so. XBox Live is what carrys XBox's system and it's a great way to play. The infustructure is all there, already for XBox Live.

The PS3 with all it's power and influence probably still won't make a better online gaming community. nfact, I'm willing to bet that there will be few truely multi-player online games and there will not be one solid framework they all work in. It will probably individual developers creating their own seperate communitys. That kind of thing never really takes off.

Now, for XBox Live, you do need a Broadband Internet Connection and a router so you can plug it in. It has to be a direct line connection too, it doesn't do Wi Fi. If that's already in place then he just needs an XBox Live Card or have an adult punch in a Credit Card and most of the games are not only online compatable, they're often designed with that in mind. Again, if mature content is an issue, XBox Live could be a bad idea. And without XBox Live, there's not much point in having an XBox.

*edit* As another responder mentioned, you might also concider a Wii. If he's not already a gamer or is a bit young, the Wii is a great option. I am a hardcore gamer, have a Wii and love it, so it's not just a kids system or anything. But a lot of people's perception says it is and if he's older his friends might make fun of him. Still, there is a set of hardcore gamers that are dedicated Nintendo fans. Maybe ask him what he thinks of the Wii in casual conversation, if you're not sure. He'll make his opinion clear.

xbox 360 is better than the ps3 for a number of reasons. First off if you have an 1080i HDTV ps3 automatically down scales the graphics to 480p. Not cool. Another reason the 360 beats the ps3 is that 360 games are faster and easier to develop for. The game selection for the 360 is awesome with such titles as gears of war in my opinion it is tied with halo2 for the best game i ever played. The controller for the 360 is much better than the controller for the ps3 because the shape of the controller provides a better grip the left and right bumper buttons are in a better spot the analog is also in a better spot. And so far all of the games that are out for both the ps3 and the 360 received higher ratings for the 360. The final reason 360 is better than the ps3 is because it is 200 dollars cheaper.

Xbox 360; Microsoft has a larger lineup than PS3 currently; System is cheaper; A strong online community; Viva Pinata. Honestly, it depends on your little brother's age as well. A Wii would be perfect if he is not a hardcore gamer and wants something that is a fraction the cost of either the Xbox 360 or PS3.

Weal over all, the Xbox is out now and like everyone saying "it's cheaper". For the PlayStation 3, it's new and those who are fans among it, are weal, dieing to have it. More over, they have almost the same futures, even thought its really not the councilor the problem: it's the games....So your little brother might have to be concern amount his taste on games.

My advise is to wait until October of 2007. Things will begin to get cheaper more games will be available. For my instances, and for the great moral mind intensity, buy your brother a book. These games are DEVIL to hunt us while we are sleep "addiction".

I'm sure Microsoft and Sony don't care for your sanity, it's your money they want. Buy your self a book or learn some knowledge comprehensive of like: go outdoors, smell the air, travel........These games shall make us stupider......!!!

I suppose features and function wise they're both near-to-similar. It all boils down to the pricing of the consoles and the game CDs.

My personal liking would be Xbox 360 because of the green sleek design. ;)
