Ok, well I've been working at Taco Bell for a little over a year now. My boss seems to have a huge power trip and loves ordering people around. This is normal in the world of fast food. However, every now and then when I mess up an order he puts me on "urinal duty" for the rest of my shift. He has me replace the urinal cakes and scrub out the urinals in the men's room. Now he doesn't assign this to anyone else but me. What's the deal?

In the UK, this would probably qualify as bullying. Not clued up on US employment law. But he's humiliating you in front of colleagues and it doesn't sound as if he's talking through any mess-ups you make or offering further training to help you get it right more often.

If you're even thinking about raising this as possible bullying or harassment issue, then you need to start documenting occurences. When did this happen, what were the circumstances etc. Very often, someone can have a legitimate complaint but it all falls apart because they can only say things like - he always does this when ... HR doesn't want to hear stuff like this. They want to know what dates it happened on - how many times it happened in the last month. No vagueness.

Even if you don't raise this with HR, having an accurate log could be useful in sitting down with him and chatting through. He might even be surprised to realise how much he's doing it to you - and how it's affecting you.

It sounds like to me he has it out for you. He wants to show you just how 'important' he is. This guy sounds full of himself and may be jealous of you or have low self esteem. I agree that the urinals need to be cleaned, but the duty should be split up amongst the emplyees, not one and only one person to punish them for some wrong doing, especially messing up an order, how petty is that? Look for another job. With a years experience under your belt you could probably be a manager! Stay open to your options and do yourself a favor, get your self away from that jerk!!

I think you should get out. He is treating you unfairly. Open and honest communication with him is the first step. If he is unwilling to communicate or shows an attitude then it might not be worth it to you to stay at a place that doesn't appreciate you. There are lot's of places that will take on a hard working person. I would at least put your feelers out!

Man, that sucks. So you working at Taco Bell cleaning urinals and making burritos. Man that's hard times. I'd take a number two in the urinal and then tell him I got your "urinal duty" for ya pal. Then when he sees it quit. Or you could just beat him with a lead pipe.

Sit him down and talk to him about it and if that doesn't work, go to higher management. This is harrassment and you don't have to take it and don't be scared to take a stand against him! There is no reason for it especially if you are a girl in this situation. Sexual harrassment and if things get worse, go after them and sue them! No more working at Taco Bell! Good luck.

I have a bully for a boss. Sickening sweet one moment--screaming bloody murder the next. Total fruitcake.

I started keeping a log--not a very detailed one, but that is my next resolution. Dates, times, what was said, any witnesses near by, etc.

There are countries that have bully laws in place. The United States is not one of them (sigh).

It sounds like a punishment for messing up orders and a convenient way to stop you from causing disruption and loss of business. All bosses are on power trips..thats life. Try to improve your work skill or you could try looking for another kind of job that more suits your skills? You gotta like what you do. The more you like it, the better you are at it. Living to work is a trap.

You should continue to work with him and respect his orders. Also, schedule an appointment with him to discuss issues relating to your career prospect. Let him aware that you have a long term goal to stay with the company and that you need to play an important role. You really need to negotiate with him. If he continues treating you the same way as he's used to, then consider to look for another job. Thanks.

There's nothing you can do. He's the boss, he can make you do whatever he likes as long as it's something in your job description. Like, he can't make you wash his car or anything.
Don't gripe about it. Rise above it. If he sees it bothers you, he will continue to give you that duty. Just do the job, and maybe he will stop.
