I feel that my government represents the interests of the majority of our population, yes. That is what they are elected to do. I communicate with my elected officials and let them know how I feel about things. Otherwise they won't be able to represent me.

Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 500 employees and has the following statistics?
*29 have been accused of spousal abuse
*7 have been arrested for fraud
*19 have been accused of writing bad checks
*117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least two businesses
*3 have done time for assault
*71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
*14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
*8 have been arrested for shoplifting
*21 are currently defendants in lawsuits
*84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year
Can you guess which organization this is? Give up yet? It's the 535 members of the United States Congress ... the same group of people who crank out hundreds of new laws each year designed to keep the rest of us in line.
This was written BEFORE the Foley scandal. Congress, our main form of governing on a national level, has become so corrupt that it will take a miracle for it to transform itself. It has always been a game, in Washington DC, where the powerful lobbies buy votes, but these last few years have been absolutely shameless. I very much doubt that there is a single politician who is without a skeleton in his closet - they wouldn't allow him to play the game unless they were certain that they could control him. (generic "him")
So, although we all have our skeletons, we need those who represent us to be above reproach so that they can't be controlled by special interests which may not be OUR interests.
It's all well and good to be able to relate to someone because, after all, they are as human as the next guy. I understand that that was part of Bush's appeal. But, when executive decisions involving the life and death of hundreds of thousands - possible millions of people are being made, I want them to be made by someone a little brighter than the guy who makes my sandwich at Subways. (As pleasant and friendly as the fellow is.) When one person controls nuclear reactors, weapons labs, departments of defense, secret service, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security - I want the man to be a little responsive. I need the Congess to perform its duty of oversight. I need them to read every bill that is set before them. These morons did not.
So I say NO. I agree with the hahahahahahaha remark. My only hope is in the American people for finally kicking the incumbents out of office and giving the ones who are left a wake up call. You are all replaceable.

My local government provides me with clean water, public safety officers, 911 service, and even recycling. There are courts and due process, and there is freedom to go state to state without hassle or loss of freedoms.
Sure, I have plenty of disagreements with politicians and bad decisions made, but I think the government is representing my interests.

No. But, how many governments are likely to be elected on a platform inspired by science fiction and alcohol, anyway?
