It needs two copies so that each daughter cell can have a complete copy of the genetic code. Mitosis only splits the cell into two; all the replication happens in the "S" stage, which is a part of interphase. Interphase is when the cell isn't dividing.

A cell that is going to divide into two cells has to have two copies of DNA so that when it divides, both daughter cells have a complete set of chromosomes (one copy of DNA each).

if it didn't copy the DNA, one of the two new cell would have no DNA. It would cause mutation, which is mostly harmful to the organism
