I have a gateway (model # 7322Gz) and it like overheats when im using too many programs and shuts off. I realized that it happans when i use too many programs so i stopped but it seems like it caught up with me anways because my laptops now a year old and its begining to overheat and just shut off when im using the most simplest of programs that dont even take up alot of memory or speed. For instance, i can be using microsoft word and be either listening to itunes or browsing the internet and my comp would just shut off.
Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem and is it even normal? Is there anything I can by to fix this or should i like take it to a specialist because its broken? You can give me more answers than just the options I laid down... i'm just worried about this laptop. I love it but its acting up and shutting off on me like crazy. Also, when i restart my computer it doesn't restrt. Comp shuts dn but has problm booting back up unless i shut down and start it manualy

No, i dont put it to shut down. It jus turns off because it overheats and i dont know if this is a good thing or if it can mess up my hard drive.

I would take it to a specialist. It could be a simple issue, like your heatsink fan or another system fan is failing/has failed, to another component is failing. With laptops, it's very hard for the average home user to dismantle, troubleshoot and repair.
Is it still under warrenty from Gateway? They would be the best place to start talking to.

It's normal for a computer to overheat when it processes too much information, and it's normal for it to shut down when it overheats.
Laptops overheat much more frequently then desktops, and while I am not technically-savvy, I know that when my laptop was doing this it was because there was actually a malfunctioning part that I had to replace.
Try taking out the battery when you're using it plugged in. This will free up a little bit of room underneath the laptop for air to circulate. But really, it sounds like exactly the same problem that I had, and I needed to get it fixed.
If you get your laptop checked out and find out that there is nothing malfunctioning, then it just means that you're overusing it. Stop using so many programs at once! Sorry, but there is no simpler answer :)
Good luck!

Have you just let the machine sit and cool down for a while? If the computer overheats, it is going to shut down.
If you're computer is continuously overheating, then, before calling any help service, look at how you are using it. Are you using it on carpet or some sort of cloth? This can lead to overheating. Also, make sure that your vent has enough space to blow out the air, letting the hot air go far from the machine without bounce-back. If it's in too close quarters, then it could overheat.
If none of that helps, then you should call technical support.

If the computer is a older one or you live in a area where there is a lot of dust and you have now cleaned out your computer it is probably over heating because it is full of dust you need to go buy a can of air shut down the computer remove the side panel and blow out all the dust make sure the computer is unplug ed when you do this OK.just clean put all the dust I do this at least once a year kind of like changing the oil in your car you know.hope this helps.

If heat is the problem there is a simple fix. Either get a can of compressed air or you can use your vaccuum.
Open your computer up and blow it out. You probably have dust bunnies the size of rhode island in there.
** With your case cover off turn your computer back on and ensure that all the fans are working properly.

Try putting a binder or something between you and the laptop. your lap produces a lot of heat. Then make sure the air intake for the little fan isnt to clogged up. If this doesnt work, run a scan looking for adware and spyware and such and hopefully then it will use less computing power. good luck

Depends on how much money you want to spend...you could upgrade the comp. CPU or you could install a more powerfull fan (or clean out the fans that are there).

Is the fan working properly? There's a vent with a fan. If it's not working that could be your problem.
