I Did AVI Augmented Virtual Instruction.
Augmented Virtual Instruction
AVI The Future Of Teaching

I see Augmented Virtual Instruction (AVI) by Avatars as the future of instructional design and teaching, allowing learners to progress at their own pace, requesting guided instruction as needed from an Avatar Instructor. The Avatars will provide scaffolding consisting of a virtual expert (dependent on level of design), assisting a novice by supplying relevant resources, templates and guides, advice, coaching, immediate evaluation of learning, relevant feedback, and various other supports. As more sophisticated design programs become available to instructional designers, the long process of writing new code will become obsolete and designers will be able to create a whole new realm of AVI, incorporating advancements in learning theory.
The proponents of self-regulated learning or applied metacognition, of which I am one, believe that instructors should guide students to use their own metacognitive discovery to personally customize learning strategies. Moderate instructor guidance involves instructor assessment feedback and cues for self-regulating strategies, but the basis of metacognition rests on the student’s observation of their own thinking and actions, and their recognition of the performance results. Moderate guidance includes group discussions to talk about problems in the learning experience, which creates collaboration. More guidance should be given in the area of abstract concepts to help the students learn to separate relevant from irrelevant information and to properly focus their attention on metacognitive tasks. Guiding the learners to experiential 2.0 learning activities helps to link integrated real life examples with classroom information.
My vision of the future of instruction at all levels of learning involves instructors who integrate Augmented Virtual Instruction with unguided, minimally guided, and moderately guided instruction. These instructors will train students within specialized classrooms to use digital technology and Web 2.0 tools such as augmented reality, virtual worlds, mobile applications, educational gaming, and Geospatial technologies, matching the learner’s current level of knowledge.
I envision the future teacher as being a coordinator between the students and Augmented Virtual Instruction incorporated into educational programs. As an example, imagine a chemistry lab in which an Avatar teacher guides students through a science experiment on the student’s mobile device. A lab bench with various beakers of chemicals, Bunsen burners, and other lab supplies needed for an experiment will be in place and labeled, on the virtual table. A demonstration will be given by the Avatar on how to conduct the experiment by mixing various chemicals. The student will then control his avatar in the program to conduct the same experiment. Instructional designers who are proponents of guided instruction theory could use step-by-step multiple choice to guide the student through the experiment. Instructional designers who are proponents of moderate guidance could design the experiment so the teaching avatar intervenes when the student makes a mistake in experimental procedure. Those instructional designers who favor unguided instruction could design this lesson as an unguided learning experience where the student could make a mistake in the mixing of chemicals and get their hand blown off. My preference is for the unguided model as I know from my own learning experiences, seeing my Avatars hand blown off would anchor a memory that would be triggered in the future if I ever was in a situation involving mixing those chemicals in the real world. This emphasis on memory retention that this example provides could be incorporated into a myriad of other instruction on avoiding the dangers of injury, where the consequences cannot be demonstrated in reality.
I believe that mankind is on the brink of a Sociocultural Evolutionary advancement where war, poverty, hunger, and self-serving ideology will become a thing of the past. If such an advancement is ever to take place, it must start with the raising up of a new generation that will institute the impetus needed to accomplish this change. This change can only be brought about through education, and this education is in the hands of future Instructional Designers using tools such as AVI. Instructional Design Technologists of the future may not just be educators but may become Gurus’ of Human Sociocultural Evolution.
